And it is more commonly spelt as "kilometre". According to some
dictionaries "kilometer" is US spelling.

In Aus both spellings are used, just to confuse things more.
Aus changed to metric, I think in 1966. There was a hilarious episode when
our state Premier (I guess similar to a US Mayor) went on TV to announce
that were were also going to change to metric time, with 10 hours per day.
So 2 pm would become 5.83 hours. There was an immediate outcry. The
announcement was made on 1st April 1967.
